Synopsis
The storm surge at the German Baltic sea coast in October 2023 was varying from an intermediate storm surge in the west to a light storm surge in the east of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The paper describes the formation of the surge followed by a statistical classification and comparison to previous events. The damage evaluation is focused on flood protection dunes maintained by the federal state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Strategic aspects for safeguarding this concept are discussed. The paper ends with a description of the storm surge effects at the inner coast.
